We kicked things off with an incredible STEM workshop, where the children learned all about Artificial Intelligence and even got to meet a real-life Cobot dog called Fluffy! We were all VERY excited to see what he could do, and his visit sparked some brilliant discussions.
Inspired by the experience, the children went on to write balanced reports exploring the advantages and disadvantages of AI in our daily lives. The quality of their writing was fantastic—well done, everyone!
Our Art workshops at Magdalen College School have been another highlight. The children had the opportunity to create artwork in a specialised art room, supported by talented MCS students. It was a wonderful chance to develop their artistic skills, and we can’t wait to return after the Easter break.
To round off the term, both classes spent a whole day with the INTOUniversity team. The children learned about the real-life responsibilities of university life—budgeting, shopping, and even doing laundry! They then delved into space-themed activities, working collaboratively just like students in a university seminar.
It’s been a term full of learning, laughter, and inspiration. We wonder what exciting adventures await us next term…
This term in Maths, our focus has been on Fractions. The children have made great progress and now confidently know how to find a common denominator, add and subtract fractions, and convert between mixed and improper fractions. To make our learning even more magical, we had some elvish help during our assessments!
In English, we’ve been using our powers of persuasion! The children have been crafting persuasive texts, weighing up the benefits and disadvantages of computer games. They’ve learned how to present arguments clearly and effectively to convince others.
In Computing, we’ve been exploring the reliability of information sources. The children have been investigating how to assess whether the information we find online is trustworthy and how to verify the accuracy of our sources.
In Science, we’ve been carrying out investigations linked to Chemistry, all based around household items. Our favourite experiment involved sugar cubes, where we investigated how long it takes for them to absorb water. It was a fun, hands-on way to learn about the properties of materials!
Both classes enjoyed a reflective day at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. They learned about Space Makers and how we can apply these concepts in school to create a more effective and inspiring learning environment. It was a wonderful day full of thoughtful discussions and ideas!
Year 5 have hit the ground running this year, with an exciting and productive first term! As we approach Christmas, we’re looking forward to even more learning and fun. One of the highlights of Term 1 was diving into the fascinating world of the Stone Age. To complement our history lessons, we’ve been reading The Boy With the Bronze Axe, which has brought this ancient era to life through its captivating story. We can’t wait to see what the next term has in store!
We used story mountains to help us plan and retell the narrative, building our confidence in storytelling. Term 1 also saw us diving into creative writing for National Poetry Day, where we crafted some truly amazing poems. Additionally, we explored observational poetry, using our surroundings as inspiration to create vivid and thoughtful verses. It’s been a fantastic term for budding writers!
In Maths, we focused on honing our arithmetic skills and revisiting the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The children worked hard to strengthen their understanding and fluency in these key areas, preparing them for more exciting challenges in the coming term!
