John Henry Newman Academy is a good primary school in the heart of Littlemore and a vibrant, happy and exciting place for children and their families. We are a two-form entry primary school for children aged 2 - 11, serving the communities of Littlemore, Rosehill and Blackbird Leys in the beautiful city of Oxford. As a Church of England school and part of the Oxford Diocesan Schools Trust (ODST), our work is underpinned by a strong Christian ethos. Our vision is to have the courage to ‘Let Your Light Shine’ (Matthew 5:16). Guided by our values of Love, Courage, Community and Celebration, we strive to create a school where every child feels valued, supported and inspired to flourish.
We are incredibly proud of our school community and the role we play within it. Through our JHN Hub, we support families and the wider community with activities such as baby groups, messy play sessions and parent classes. We believe that schools thrive when they work closely with families and the local community and this sense of togetherness is something that makes John Henry Newman Academy very special. At our school we aspire for excellence through our Seven Lights: excellent behaviour, excellent teaching, an excellent curriculum, excellent experiences, excellent communication, excellent leadership and excellent data systems. These guide our work and help ensure that every child receives the very best opportunities during their time with us.
We are fortunate to have a wonderful school site with multiple playgrounds, a large field, the Four Oaks area and our much loved Forest School, complete with a very deep pond! We also make the most of the incredible city around us, building links with places such as the Story Museum, Oxford colleges and many local organisations so that our children feel connected to the city they live in. Our school is built on a rich history of education in Littlemore. The first school here was founded in 1830 by the priest and poet John Henry Newman and there has been a church school serving the community ever since. Today, we are proud to continue this tradition while looking forward with ambition for our pupils and families.
I feel incredibly privileged to serve as Executive Headteacher of both John Henry Newman Academy and St Christopher’s School in Cowley. Every day I see our pupils learning, growing and discovering their talents, supported by dedicated staff and a caring community.
If you ever visit our school, you may also notice a few flamingos around! My office is affectionately known as “the pink room”, complete with flamingo blinds and a bright pink sofa. It reflects something that is important to us as a school, that learning should be joyful, welcoming and full of personality! Around here we often say that our school is not just amazing, it’s “Flamazing!”
